AOL Chat

Once registered, you can savour the multi-faceted AOL chat rooms. Beware, though, the service is not moderated.
While AOL users already have access to AOL Chat, non-members can sample the service from the AOL website. Unfortunately, this isn't quite as easy as it sounds. First you need to register for, download and install the latest version of AOL Instant Messenger (AIM 4.3). Once you've done this you can return to the site and select a chat, though the choice of rooms isn't particularly large. On the upside, chatting with AIM couldn¿t be simpler and the plain, advert-free interface means it works very quickly and there are no unnecessary distractions. Features include the ability to insert a mark into a chat so that if you leave your keyboard you can return to the precise point where you left off and a "buddy list" of your favourite chatters, which enables you to find out when they're online. The quality of chat via AOL Instant Messenger is variable, and as conversations are not moderated they can often become quite coarse, though you can easily block persistent offenders.
